The Green Party is growing fast. We now represent people in Westminster and in a record number of local councils, as well as in the London Assembly.
Here in East Hertfordshire, following the local elections in 2023, we now have 1 County Councillor, 17 District Councillors, 21 Town Councillors and 1 Parish Councillor.

How Local Government Works
There are 3 tiers of local government in Hertfordshire – County, District and Town/Parish. Voting for councillors takes place every 4 years. The next local elections are due in 2025.
Each tier and the corresponding elected representatives is responsible for different areas of everyday life in the region.
County
Hertfordshire County Council are responsible for: Children’s and Adult Care Services, Highways and Roads, Waste and Recycling, Rights of Way, Public Health, Fire and Rescue, Trading Standards, Libraries and Birth/Death/Marriage Records.
District
There are 10 district and borough councils in Hertfordshire. East Herts District Council are responsible for our Bin Collecting, Planning, Housing, Parking Fines, Sports and Leisure Facilities, Local Parks as well as Council Tax.
Town / Parish
Hertfordshire comprises 125 town, parish and community councils (see our full list for East Herts here). They look after Street Bins, Public Toilets, Allotments, Village Halls, Cemeteries and get involved with any Planning activity which may affect the local area.
East Herts Green Party covers the same area as East Herts District Council – including the towns of Bishop’s Stortford, Buntingford, Hertford, Sawbridgeworth and Ware. We campaign on local, national and international issues and look to stand candidates in local and general elections.
Voting for East Herts District Council takes place across 26 Wards and results in 50 elected District Councillors. The number of Councillors per ward is dependent on size of the ward, ranging from one to three people. The last District Elections took place in May 2023 when the Green Party became the largest party, ending 28 years of Conservative Party dominance.
