Mayor of Hertford Councillor Rachel Carter talks about becoming Mayor and her charity of the year.
“There are many joys in being Hertford’s Mayor: helping to mark important moments in the town’s year from Christmas to Remembrance; meeting volunteers, business owners and residents of all ages; and taking part in a whole range of activities.
One of the most rewarding things is choosing the Mayor’s charities for the year. Not as easy as you might think, given how many brilliant local charities there are! After some thought, I decided on Hertford and District Guides, knowing all they do to build the confidence and skills of girls and young women. They are fundraising this year to upgrade the security and facilities of their Guide Hut.
East Herts Citizens Advice is my other charity. My father was a volunteer for many years and I know what an essential service it is. The support and advice it provides free of charge to all citizens on debt, benefits and all manner of other issues is invaluable. Its funding has recently been cut as councils come under financial pressure and it may have to reduce its hours. So it was a no brainer, really, to choose this charity, which does so much for Hertford citizens. I’ll be kicking off the fundraising year with a sponsored circular walk around Hertford – ‘Beating the Bounds’ of our beautiful town.”
